Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate is an ester formed by the dehydration condensation of retinoic acid and pinacolol. Its biggest difference from other retinoic acid derivatives lies in its unique retinoic acid properties and direct mechanism of action.

1. Direct Action, No Conversion Required: Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate does not require metabolic breakdown into other biologically active forms (such as retinoic acid) and can directly bind to cellular retinoic acid receptors (RARs) or retinoid receptors. This is similar to the mechanism of all-trans retinoic acid (retinoic acid), but avoids the restrictions and high irritation associated with retinoic acid as a prescription drug.

2. Extremely Low Irritation: Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate is less irritating than retinol (retinoic acid). The use of pinacolol modification results in even lower irritation and demonstrates its safety and gentleness for use around the eyes.
