The difference in hair color is mainly related to the structure, content and distribution of two types of melanin in the hair, namely eumelanin and pheomelanin. Eumelanin is brown or black oval or spherical insoluble particles with uniform shape and clear edges. Pheomelanin is red or golden oval or rod-shaped particles with small size and soluble in dilute alkali. In general, the higher the eumelanin content, the darker the hair.

5,6-Dihydroxyindole is an important intermediate of melanogen, which was first discovered in plants. 5,6-Dihydroxyindole is non-toxic and has no side effects. It has a similar hair dyeing mechanism to 1,4-Benzenediamine and its derivatives, but the dyeing effect is very obvious. It is one of the best choices to replace aniline compounds as synthetic hair dyes.

5,6-Dihydroxyindole is automatically converted into melanin on the hair, which accurately replenishes melanin for the hair and returns the hair to its natural black color.
