Benzenesulfonic Acid (CAS:98-11-3) is a colorless needle-like or leaf-like crystal belonging to the aromatic sulfonic acid family. It is a strong organic acid prepared via the sulfonation of benzene. Industrially, Benzenesulfonic Acid is a vital organic synthesis intermediate. Its primary uses include: being alkali-fused to manufacture phenol and resorcinol; serving as a catalyst and dehydrating agent in esterification and dehydration reactions; functioning as a curing agent in the casting industry; and being applied as an acidizing agent in oilfield water injection. Additionally, it is used as a laboratory reagent for testing ammonium and potassium salts and for zinc determination.

Catalytic Function: Used as a catalyst in esterification and dehydration reactions. Its advantage over sulfuric acid is its weaker oxidizing nature, which helps minimize side reactions.

Oilfield Application: Utilized in oilfield water flooding to release formation blockage and increase permeability. Its low reactivity with carbonates allows it to acidize deeper formations effectively, offering low corrosivity and improved safety compared to HCl.

Industrial Precursor: It is a key precursor for manufacturing important chemical products, such as phenol and resorcinol, via alkali fusion.
